USMNT star Gio Reyna is heading to the Premier League and will join Nottingham Forest on a loan with Forest that doesn’t include a buy option, according to insider Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday.
The loan to Nottingham will also see Gio Reyna extend his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2026.
“We are happy that we have been able to extend the contract with Gio prematurely for a further year. He is a player who has enormous skills and in whom we still see a lot of potential,“ Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl said in a statement. “In the past few days Gio has approached us with the request to play for Nottingham Forest until the end of the season. We have complied with this and now wish Gio maximum sporting success for the second half of the season in England.”
The move to the Premier League will see Reyna join 16th place team in the Prem who are in a relegation battle, with Forest also facing the possibility of a point deduction due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches.
Reyna, 21, has seen a lack of minutes this season with Borussia Dortmund, totaling 336 minutes for the German club across all competitions. Reyna has yet to register a goal or assist this season with Dortmund.
The USMNT midfielder suffered a fractured leg in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada, which would sideline the player from the start of the Bundesliga season. Other European teams were interested in the talents of Reyna, including Marseille, Real Sociedad, Sevilla and AS Monaco, among others.
Gio Reyna will join USMNT teammate Matt Turner, who has been sharing the starting goalkeeper position with Odysseas Vlachodimos.
