Gerald Everett Has Sneaky Fantasy Potential On The Seahawks

After four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Gerald Everett signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2021 offseason and will now get to catch passes from Russell Wilson instead of Jared Goff. While Everett has not been a super productive tight end in terms of receptions and yards, he is poised for a breakout season in 2021.

I will preface this article by saying Everett is a calculated risk at the tight end position, as he has not had more than 45 receptions and 450 yards in a season. However, he did not see many targets in Sean McVay’s offense, as his career high in targets on a season was 62 in 2020. The McVay, Shanahan, and LaFleur offenses are predicated on the run and require tight ends to be elite blockers.

Former Rams passing game coordinator Shane Waldron is now the OC for the Seahawks. Everett knows his system and has a familiarity with the way Waldron runs an offense. The Seahawks upgraded their offensive line so they should have some semblance of a running game but make no mistake, this offense runs through Russell Wilson.

Everett will take a backseat to DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett when it comes to the primary pass-catchers, but Everett is the sole tight end in Seattle. While they have Will Dissly on the roster, he is used primarily as a blocker and only had 25 receptions in 2020. With all the attention on Metcalf and Lockett, Everett may have a favorable matchup every time he lines up.

The Seahawks also lost David Moore, Jacob Hollister, and Greg Olsen in the offseason. Those three accounted for 84 receptions in 2020, so is it crazy to think Everett could have a 60-65 catch season in 2021? I say no. After watching Everett’s highlights, he reminds me of a slower Jonnu Smith. Everett is a versatile tight end who can catch screen passes, run jets sweeps, and can even get away with lining up at the receiver position.

If you like having an elite tight end in fantasy, Everett is probably not your guy. But if you fill in your running back and receiver positions with solid players, why not take a swing on a guy like Everett?
