Geno Smith signs two-year extension with Raiders

New Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith has agreed to a two-year, $86 million extension, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was among the first to report Thursday. The deal will include $66.5 million guaranteed, keeping him in Las Vegas through 2027.

Schefter later clarified that it will be $75 million with incentives that can make it worth up to $85.5 million.

The Raiders acquired Smith from the Seattle Seahawks last month in exchange for a third-round pick. He was entering the final year of his current deal and was reportedly seeking upwards of $45 million per year–a number that Seattle apparently wasn’t able to get to.

This new extension doesn’t quite reach that threshold. But Smith, 34, will have the 16th-highest average annual value ($37.5M) among quarterbacks in the NFL, tied with Derek Carr. The Seahawks’ new quarterback, Sam Darnold, will only be on the books for $4 million less per year.

The journeyman took a while to establish himself as a legitimate option behind center. He broke onto the scene in 2022 with Seattle and has been a middle-of-the-pack option each of the last three seasons. In 2024, he completed a career-high 70.4 percent of his passes for 4,320 yards, 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

I don’t know what the Raiders’ contingency plan is if Smith doesn’t play up to expectations. He will be in Las Vegas through his age-37 season; he’s not getting any younger. Brock Bowers is elite, but the Raiders lack the necessary pass catchers elsewhere and don’t have the defense to compensate for it.
