Multiple Mets players are campaigning for team to add Sandy Alcantara

We’re not even a week into the 2025 MLB Season, so the trade is obviously a long way away.

However, that hasn’t stopped multiple members from one NL team from campaigning to add coveted starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara, who’s expected to be the best arm on the trade market come July.

During their series against the Miami Marlins this week, three Mets players–including superstar Juan Soto, who signed the biggest deal in American sports history over the summer–day-dreamed about the possibility of adding the 6-foot-5 ace.

(Quotes from the New York Post’s Mike Puma)

“It would be one of the best trades that we could have,” Soto said. “I know we have great pitching here, but adding a Cy Young winner like that would be huge. It’s going to take a lot to get him.”

“It would almost be like adding Soto,” Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor said. “You add Soto, it’s going to help the team. You add Alcantara and it’s going to help the team.”

“He has the stuff and the mental makeup to be able to play in New York,” outfielder Starling Marte said. “He’s got the mental strength and physical gifts to be able to have success here, and I think we have shown that we help pitchers even more.”

Alcantara, 29, did not appear in a game last season due to recovering from Tommy John Surgery. But the right-hander won the NL Cy Young in 2022, topping MLB in innings pitched (228.2) with a 2.28 ERA and 2.99 FIP.

Alcantara isn’t someone who generates a crazy amount of whiffs, but he’s generally done a good job limiting hard contact without allowing free runners. He’s a bulldog on the mound. He’s going to compete with the best and is fearless–those are traits that teams want come October.

It’s going to take a pretty large prospect haul to land the two-time All-Star. When healthy, he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball. Pitchers can go deep into games–he’s thrown nine complete games since the start of 2022–are a complete rarity in today’s game. Bullpens matter in October, but the ability to save them the trouble is a rare trait that few discuss.

The Mets have deep pockets but will have to be willing to go even deeper to land Alcantara. Will the players get their wish?
