For years on the very accessible interwebs, there was constant debate about whether or not Carmelo Anthony was worthy of making the Basketball Hall of Fame.
We now have a resolution–whether many disagree or not. The 18-year veteran was officially elected into the National Basketball Hall of Fame Wednesday, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania was among the first to report.
The 10-time All-Star had a storied NBA career with six different franchises, most notably the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks, where he made six of his 10 All-Star teams from 2011-17.
The former No. 3 overall pick was one of the most gifted shotmakers of his generation. For his career, he averaged 22.5 points on 44.7 percent shooting, including 35.5 percent from 3-point range and 81.4 percent from the free-throw line. He also averaged 6.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.0 steals for his career.
He never won an MVP, but Anthony led the NBA in scoring in 2012-13 (28.7 points) on 44.9/37.9/83 shooting splits. He was an elite bucket-getter, primarily from the mid-range–which has been diluted (to a certain extent) in today’s NBA.
Though perhaps his biggest honor is that he’s a three-time Gold Medalist and one of the most decorated Team USA basketball players of all time. He averaged 10.8 points in his Olympic career, but the 6-foot-8 wing averaged 16.3 points and 12.1 points over his final two Olympic runs, respectively.
Durant surpassed him this last year, but the Basketball Hall of Fame includes everything–not just everything accomplished in the NBA, which is important to note.
I think Anthony’s first-ballot honor into the HOF is well deserved. The full 2025 inductee list will be announced on April 5.
