Florida State DE Patrick Payton Transfers To LSU

When Bryce Underwood changed his mind and committed to Michigan, it freed up a ton of NIL money. LSU has since gone on a rampage in the transfer portal. Patrick Payton becomes the latest addition after landing him via Florida State.

247 Sports report Matt Zenitz was the first to report the news:

Former Florida State star EDGE Patrick Payton is currently expected to transfer to LSU, sources tell @CBSSports/@247Sports.

Payton, 6-foot-5, 250, notched four sacks in 2024 and seven sacks in 2023. He’s going to be counted on to be the top sack artist for LSU in 2025. Payton was previously thought of as a top draft pick for this upcoming draft. The problem is, he was totally mediocre for Florida State as the entire Seminoles team tanked. He will look to rebuild that draft stock in Baton Rouge.

The 2022 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year has immense talent. With one year of eligibility remaining, 2025 will be his last shot to improve that draft status.

With Garrett Nussmeier returning and a bunch of additions via the portal, LSU should be primed to contend again this upcoming year.

I talked about Patrick Payton two different times during the Stock Report notes this past year. Thought he was a ghost against Georgia Tech. Ditto in the game against Boston College. We’re going to find out a lot about Payton in 2025. Right now, he’s more sizzle than steak. That pure talent is there but we need more production and heading to the SEC, will be a great way to prove that.
