It appears that the Deion Sanders effect is real, as it was announced today on The Pat McAfee Show that the number two prospect in the 2025 cycle, five-star quarterback Julian “Juju” Lewis committed to play for the Colorado Buffaloes next year. Lewis, who re-classified for the 2025 cycle, originally committed to USC, but announced this week he was decommitting. Lewis had originally committed to their 2026 class back in August of 2023.
Julian Lewis has been the talk of the recruiting trail this year after taking visits to Auburn, Indiana, Georgia as well as Colorado before making the choice to end up in Boulder. FWIW, I did predict this back in the summer. Lewis had this to say on what led to his decision to play for Coach Prime and Colorado. Full quote via 247sports.com:
“Of course it was big for me, just coming in after (quarterback) Shedeur (Sanders), just seeing what he’s done to Colorado and what he’s turned it into,” Lewis said. “It’s definitely a blessing, getting put in this position, coming after him and his dad (coach Deion Sanders). I couldn’t beat it.”
“Coach Prime’s always said the best man’s going to play, and that’s really what I wanted — to be able to come in and compete, start as a freshman,” Lewis said. “I wouldn’t have much fun sitting on the bench, so I want to come in somewhere I can get a chance to play. So he’s going to let me compete for that. That was big for me.”
This is a massive recruitment for Deion Sanders and the Colorado program. Landing Julian Lewis takes them to 66th in the country, however they only have 11 commitments as of 11/21/24. I expect many more recruits to come flooding in after this. If Deion actually stays at Colorado and doesn’t bolt for the NFL, landing Lewis is going to be huge for their future recruiting as he was able to land a five-star quarterback from a powerhouse program out west in USC. Don’t be shocked if CU dominates in the transfer portal this off-season.
