Five-Star cornerback and Miami commitment Cormani McClain will not sign his letter of intent on national signing day. McClain is currently the No. 2 ranked player in the class of 2023, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. The news was first dropped on Twitter by his mother.
The news came as quite a surprise as it was expected that McClain was going to sign his letter of intent and officially become a Hurricane. McClain’s high school, Lakeland High School, was even expecting him to sign this morning.
Now the question is, why didn’t McClain sign? Well, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders appears to be trying to get McClain to flip and head to Boulder, Colorado.
“Colorado in touch with Cormani McClain already this morning,” Wiltfong said on 247Sports’ Signing Day show. “So the Buffaloes trying to make a move on the No. 1 cornerback in the country. He has talked to coach Deion Sanders this morning.” Quote via 247Sports.
Obviously, Sanders is one of the top recruiters in the nation and players want to play for an NFL legend. That is especially true for a cornerback that is looking to learn from Sanders.
This would not be the first time Sanders flipped a top recruit. In last year’s recruiting cycle Sanders was able to flip cornerback Travis Hunter, the No. 1 player in the nation, from Florida State.
It looks like Sanders wants to pair Hunter with Sanders to create an elite cornerback duo. In a now-deleted Instagram comment, Sanders made it clear McClain knows where to find him.
If McClain continues to push back signing his letter of intent he will have until Feb. 1, 2023, to make a decision. If that is the case, Colorado will not be the only suitor looking to pull McClain away from Miami. Prior to signing day, there were rumors Alabama was looking to get back into the mix and land McClain. An extra couple of months could help the Crimson Tide get back into the recruitment.
It looks like Miami, Colorado, and Alabama will be looking to land one of the best players in the 2023 college football recruiting cycle. Only time will tell who wins out.
