First Attacking Domino Falls at Chelsea as Olivier Giroud Set to Leave

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is set to leave the club this offseason and join AC Milan in Italy. The French international has battled for playing time for the Blues, but received few nods over Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. While manager Thomas Tuchel did make it clear that Giroud is a “big factor” at the club, the 36-year-old wants more playing time and he will get it at AC Milan.

According to sources close to ESPN, the Italian club is close to a deal with Chelsea for €2 million. While the price is not high, Milan will be getting a traditional striker that will hold up play well and can score at an effective clip. He tallied 39 goals in 119 matches for Chelsea. The Frenchman appeared twice for his country at this year’s Euros before they were bounced from the competition by Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Giroud is the first domino to fall in the attacking front at Chelsea. The reigning Champions League winners have made their summer targets very clear, and at the top of that list is Erling Haaland. The 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker is efficient, fast, and incredibly good at putting balls in the net – he tallied 41 goals in as many games for the club. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Tuchel have prioritized his signing, but Dortmund’s price tag on the Norwegian striker may prove difficult – the price has fluctuated between €150 and €200 million.

Chelsea won’t slow down this transfer cycle, but their hunt for Erling Haaland may see more attackers, including Tammy Abraham, among others, leave the club this offseason.
