Wimbledon Final: A Preview Of Djokovic VS Berrettini

The grass will be mowed, and the lines will be drawn for this Sunday, when world number 1 Novak Djokovic takes on world number 9 Matteo Berrettini in the Wimbledon Final. Both players will have the chance to make history, shape their legacies, and earn $2,399,520. For Matteo, the Wimbledon final will offer him his first-ever grand slam win. The veteran Novak will have the chance to defend his 2-time title here in Wimbledon. More importantly, he has the opportunity to meet his rivals, Nadal and Federer, in the 20 grand slam win club. He’s also playing to keep his golden slam alive, which would solidify him as the GOAT of tennis.

Path To Get To The Final

With the finals being set in stone, we can discuss the paths both players took to reach the final stage. Novak held off Denis Shapovalov in the semis after a slight scare, being down 3-5 in the first set. Berrettini defeated the 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz in 4 sets in his semi-final match. Contrary to most grand slam draws, neither player had to defeat a top 5 seed opponent to reach the final. I wouldn’t say the draw was easy for either player, but for Djokovic at least, this path was definitely smoother than the ones he has experienced in the past.

Player Specialities And Attributes

From what we’ve seen of Berrettini, he capitalizes on his first serve and his ability to pounce on each ball. Djokovic, on the other hand, maintains a relaxed position in rallies and waits for his opponent to make the error. This is going to be a key point in the match for the Italian as he will have to find success in finishing every point off as soon as possible.

In the semis, Djokovic did have some trouble returning Shapovalov’s monster first serve, and a similar problem can occur against Berrettini. He has the potential to reach 146 miles an hour on his first serve, which has proved to be difficult to return throughout this tournament. Around 50 percent of his serves have gone unreturned, and Novak will have to focus on finding a way to change that, even if it means he has to stand at the back wall like Rafael Nadal. Along with a huge serve comes a huge forehand for the Italian.

But when Matteo is exhilarating that much energy and power to maintain his playstyle, Novak must make it a primary focus to drain the younger player by staying consistent in his returns throughout each point. And most notably, Novak has his sensational flexibility to combat the big shots coming his way. Really for Djokovic, it is all about getting to each ball and playing like a backboard. I mean, that is what has gotten him 19 grand slam wins, and it surely can get him his 20th.

Who Do I Have Winning The Wimbledon Final?

If you ask me, I would put all my money on the Serbian to win his 20th title on Sunday. This prediction comes down solely to experience. Novak has played in 30 grand slam championships, compared to 0 appearances for the younger Matteo. Though nerves will play a factor for both players, Matteo should feel more of it, as it’s his first final.

The question is, can the Italian use the pressure to come out more fierce than ever? Can he use the fact that he would be the first-ever Italian man to win Wimbledon to motivate him through the long rallies Novak will force? And can he use his youth to run from the baseline to the tape of the net and from the left alley to the right alley in order to reach every ball? We’ll get the answer we’re looking for this Sunday, but looking at solely the numbers and stats, it would be too hard to predict that Matteo pulls off this upset.

For now, all we can do is wait to see history made on Sunday at the Wimbledon final, regardless of who holds the 1st place trophy and who holds the runner-up plate.
