The Utah Hockey Club landed Mikhail Sergachev in a stunner. There’s so much to cover with NHL Free Agency coming up so I’m not going to waste any time. Let’s just have a quick chat about the fantasy hockey angle with all of this.
The Tampa part of this is easy. Victor Hedman is the clear number one and will carry this powerplay unit. Maybe JJ Moser is a sneaky secondary guy in the late, late rounds.
The Utah part is fascinating. You may be quick to crown Sergachev as the guy here but I wouldn’t be too confident in that. The quarterback of the powerplay means the most in terms of fantasy. That’s who you want. Are you sure Sean Durzi is automatically supplanted? I’m a Sergachev fan but ignoring what Durzi did last year is crazy.
By the way, as I’m writing this; Utah agreed to a new contract for Durzi, who was an RFA prior to signing. It wasn’t a cheap deal either. $6 million new AAV for Durzi. Oh, this was his player card last year too. Still young and improving.
Keep this in mind too. This is the injury Sergachev is now coming off of. What if Tampa Bay knows something we don’t? They’re usually a pretty smart team. What if we’ve already seen the best of Sergachev? I’m not saying that’s the case but it can’t be ruled out.
The positive part of this is Utah will be more competitive than people think next year. That team can score goals. They have Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther as young guns. In a role with heavy ice time on the first pair with John Marino, he should be in a spot to do damage.
This one is very tricky. I guess I’ll know the spot when I see it for Sergachev. I’m not jumping for him in the super early rounds but I can be talked into it at a certain price. That price still remains to be seen.
