Fantasy Hockey: Mackenzie Blackwood Traded To Sharks
Mackenzie Blackwood has been traded to the San Jose Sharks, but what does it mean from a fantasy hockey perspective? Does Blackwood have any fantasy value with the Sharks? Let’s have a quick chat about everything you need to know.
Some are calling me the fantasy goalie whisperer after what happened last year. I can’t stress this rule enough and it needs to be preached moving forward for all goalies in fantasy. Do not pick goalies on bad teams. Don’t do it. Never do it. Again, a perfect example of this is Petr Mrazek having NEGATIVE points on the season for Chicago in 2022. Blackwood likely will follow that path with the Sharks and will be a total negative on your team.
The biggest thing for goalies is finding a guy that collects wins. It’s four points for a win and often times if your guy doesn’t collect the win you walk away with negative points. Blackwood, 26, averaged one fantasy point per game in 2022. Keep in mind, that was while playing for a Devils team that made the playoffs. If Blackwood performs like he did last year but with a terrible Sharks team instead… It’s going to spell bad news for fantasy managers.
This Sharks team stinks and is probably going to be worse the second Erik Karlsson is dealt. All indications are that happens this offseason. This Sharks team has virtually no talent on the roster and is in the midst of a total rebuild.
Also, I’m not sure Blackwood is even the guaranteed starter. Kaapo Kähkönen still exists and may take the lead role with the team anyway. Steer clear of Blackwood in fantasy. You’re playing with fire otherwise and are asking to get negative points on the season. Do not listen to Sean Allen if he ranks Blackwood high. That’s the best advice I can give you.
