We’re six weeks away from the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. The Avalanche don’t care. They weren’t waiting for another second and totally gave up trying to extend Mikko Rantanen. The Carolina Hurricanes were the winners of the Rantanen sweepstakes securing his rights via trade.
Fantasy (regardless of the sport) is a game of opportunity and talent. Fantasy managers now have to deal with the cards we’re dealt in the aftermath of the deal. I don’t own any of the players who were dealt in our website league, but Trey will do his best to guide you on what to do following the Rantanen deal anyway. Let’s have a quick chat on how fantasy hockey managers should proceed from here!
When it comes to Rantanen, if you have him you’re probably just hanging onto him. Losing Nathan MacKinnon as your linemate stinks but Sebastian Aho is a true number one center in his own right. The problem is also losing Cale Makar too.
Rantanen, 28, posted 104 points last season and 105 points the season prior. That’s 77 powerplay points between those two seasons. If you’re worried about anything with the new landing spot, it’s that maybe those powerplay totals come down. Then again, Carolina was second in the NHL in PP% last season so maybe that’s not even something to worry about.
Rantanen is true superstar in his own right. Yes, being away from Colorado stings but this guy is going to score goals regardless of what team he plays for. Plus, the Hurricanes are a damn good team. They have been a contender for many years now. Andrei Svechnikov is damn good in his own right to provide that sandpaper.
Long story short; you’re hanging onto Rantanen with the lone exception on if your league mate offers you a lopsided Godfather offer you can’t say no to.
This might sound boring but I think if you have Necas, you’re holding onto him too. If anything, his stock probably goes up. In Carolina, Necas was constantly fighting for the top right winger spot with Seth Jarvis and Jarvis was really winning that battle. With Colorado, Necas fills the top spot replacing Rantanen, and now gets MacKinnon.
If your league mate that has Necas is open to dealing him, maybe float an offer out there. Don’t overpay but if you can trade for Necas, you should do it.
Quick side notes:
Taylor Hall is a waste of time. Don’t bother even adding him beyond a daily streamer. Jack Drury is also a no. He’s likely a bottom six defensive minded stopper.
