DeAndre Hopkins now plays for the Chiefs but what does it mean in terms of fantasy football?
That’s why you’re here… duh… so let’s just get on with it because I feel like this one is pretty easy to diagnose.
Hopkins, 32, has 15 receptions for 173 yards and one touchdown this season. He’s basically been a non-factor in terms of fantasy this season. In fairness, Calvin Ridley hasn’t been a factor either. This Titans offense looks pretty broken so some fantasy managers may feel like better days are ahead in Kansas City.
Maybe that’s true. Maybe better days will be there. I just think this is a total sucker play. If you have Hopkins rostered on your team, trade him to a team that thinks he will come to life now that he’s playing with Patrick Mahomes.
Speaking of Mahomes… is anybody going to talk about the fact that he’s currently QB22 on the season in fantasy? By the way, Deshaun Watson is QB23. That’s not even a joke. Mahomes has been that mediocre in terms of fantasy. Adding an old Hopkins probably isn’t going to change that.
Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the league and if he had Andy Reid you would view him differently but there’s no need to go down that rabbit hole today. What you need to know is that Mahomes currently sports a 6-8 TD to INT ratio. They’re a team that relies on defense and running the football. The old Chiefs lighting up the scoreboards, that’s just not who they are anymore. It’s hard to see how that changes with an old and diminished Hopkins.
Yes, the Titans’ offense is broken but has anybody actually watched Hopkins the player? I’m not sure he can run a 5.0 flat in the 40 anymore. He certainly won’t help the team speed in KC. Has good hands but he’s slow as dirt now. He also tore his MCL right before the season and it looks like he’s still fighting through that.
If you have Hopkins and a rival team in your fantasy league is excited about this addition… take advantage. Sell him while the new car smell is still there. Sure, Hopkins may find the end zone a few times but I’m highly skeptical this is a player you can rely on in your starting lineup every single week. The Chiefs’ reputation far outweighs the actual offensive firepower. That’s how I would play it.
