Exposing Myself On My Biggest NFL Draft Whiffs: Kyren Williams
It was another good NFL Draft year for Vendetta. We were once again the most accurate publication for all things related to the draft this past year. I’ll stack my resume against anyone. 1.7% of the time I do miss and unlike the rest of the draft community, I am willing to expose myself and remain accountable for my actions. I know the rest of them run and hide. Today we’re going to talk about Kyren Williams and why I missed.
The new hosts of Draft Busters gave me some compliments that can be heard on the debut episode. My track record on scouting running backs is strong but I certainly missed on the Rams starting running back. No question about that. I’m exposing myself when I don’t have to. Something the rest of the fools like Todd McFraud and Daniel Jeremiah would never do.
Williams, 23, rushed for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns during his first year as the lead back. The former Notre Dame product averaged 5.0 yards per carry too. He finished as RB4 in fantasy for the 2023-24 NFL Season too.
In fairness, I did tell you to go buy Williams in fantasy. I just didn’t love him as a pure prospect. It mostly had everything to do with speed. Williams notched a 4.65 in the 40 at the Combine. In fairness to myself, that probably was a big reason why Williams slid to the 5th round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He likely would have been a third round pick based on production.
Still, I was too harsh on Williams. I probably wrote him off more than I should have. For a 5th rounder, the Rams did well here. He’s a good player that runs hard, can catch, and can block. I should have been higher on Williams during the pre-draft process. Hand up. I got this wrong. But so did basically every other team so was I really wrong?
Also, I said a lot of similar things about Dameon Pierce a year ago, and look what happened to him… Getting Wally Pipped by Devin Singletary.
Speed still matters at the running back position and my approach works more often than not. Williams was just one that slipped through the cracks and I’m here to answer the bell.
