Padres First Baseman Eric Hosmer is Incredibly Overrated

I remember the day San Diego signed Eric Hosmer. What shocked me and many was how much it was for as well as the stupid length of time. Let’s face the facts here. Eric Hosmer has always been overrated. For some reason, however, fans still praise his inconsistent attributes on the field.

Eric Hosmer gets credit mostly for being a part of the 2015 Kansas City Royals World Championship team. He was a key piece. He came through in the clutch and big moments resulting in a ring. Also, he was the third overall pick in the 2008 draft for KC.

I’m sure Hosmer is a nice guy and all, but is he worth $144 million? Hell no. The Padres signed him with that steep price tag along with eight years before the 2017 season. As a Padre, he puts up okay numbers, but nothing that warrants 18 million a year. In four seasons, his slash line sits at .260/.317/.411/.727.

Arguably his best season came during his contract year in 2017 with Kansas City, hitting .318/.385/.498 with 25 home runs, and 94 runs batted in. At 31, it would seem that he still could do that, but his average and power numbers flip-flop. In 2016, he hit .265. In 2018, he hit .253. His 2017 season is proving to be an anomaly.

There is even a worse aspect for Hosmer nowadays. He happens to play for a third-place team that is grossly overrated. The 2021 Padres have a superstar at their hands with Tatis without a doubt. The problem is that Hosmer sits alongside Manny Machado, Chris Paddack, and Blake Snell. They all combine for a team that is super overhyped.
