Eric Bieniemy Has Proven He’s Not Head Coach Material

If I were Sam Howell’s father, I can promise you that I would have gotten in a fight with Eric Bieniemy by now. Bieniemy put his big boy pants on this year and went out on his own by taking the Commanders offensive coordinator job. No more Andy Reid there to assist him. If we have learned anything from this year, it’s that Bieniemy is a moron and has proven he’s not head coach material.

Considering that Jack Del Rio already got fired, now is as good of a time as any to evaluate the job that Bieniemy has done. He’s not the only problem in Washington, but it’s pretty apparent that he’s not part of the solution either. Suggesting otherwise would indicate that you’re just not paying attention.

I’m over this idea that it’s not fair that Bieniemy hasn’t gotten a head job yet. Are you watching the games this year? Bieniemy might be one of the worst playcallers in the league and there’s no chance any smart team is interested based on his body of work this year.

The fact of the matter is that this offense is almost worse across the board than they were a year ago. If Bieniemy can’t outproduce what Scott Turner did a year ago, why are we even pretending that Bieniemy is this home run hire? It’s just simply not true.

Nothing is more damning than the fact that Bieniemy has gotten his quarterback killed all year. Washington has given up 55 sacks through 12 games in 2023. A season ago, Washington gave up 48 sacks all year.

We know the offensive line stinks in Washington, but that’s not the point. It has everything to do with the way Bieniemy manages the game. He doesn’t manage the game. He brings nothing to the table outside of dialing up a bunch of pass plays. He’s nothing more than a Madden video game coordinator. That’s the truth. Washington leads the NFL in pass percentage (67.79%) while not having an offensive line. A great way to get your young quarterback killed, which is exactly what’s happened.

Please, show me on a whiteboard what Bieniemy does that’s so brilliant. I’ll wait. Show me what it is that he does that’s so revolutionary. There is no strategy behind what he does. He dials up a bunch of pass plays and asks his quarterback to go win the game. There hasn’t been any coaching here. It’s hey kid, bail us out. Maybe that works with Patrick Mahomes. They’re not winning games in Washington with that.

Again, they’re marginally better or eerily similar across the board. What Scott Turner did last year was basically as productive, which just can’t happen. Especially when you consider that Howell should be a QB upgrade over what Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke were last year. Add in the fact that Brian Robinson got shot last year and has been healthy this year.

2022: Time of possession (33:21), yards per game (348.6), yards per carry (4.0), yards per pass (6.8), 3rd down percentage (35.22%), points per game (18.9).

2023: Time of possession (31:41), yards per game (375), yards per carry (4.5), yards per pass (6.9), 3rd down percentage (38.22%), points per game (20.5).

Depending on the way the Commanders finish the season, those numbers could fall basically right in line with what they did last year. Especially as the weather gets worse and it becomes harder to score.

Why isn’t anybody throwing a riot for Scott Turner to get a head coaching job? If anything, Bieniemy has better cards to deal with. Hell, Jahan Dotson feels like he plateaued after a promising rookie year. Nobody going to talk about that?

We have to stop with this nonsense that Bieniemy is this great coach. If anything, he’s proved the opposite this year. He’s gotten Howell killed and that alone should make teams think twice. When Bieniemy doesn’t get a head coaching job this year, let’s please remember that he’s done nothing except prove he doesn’t deserve that kind of opportunity.
