Have no fear, Elias Pettersson is staying. After a weird rollercoaster ride, the Canucks finally got Pettersson to agree to stick around long term. Pettersson just got paid and will agree to an eight-year extension with the Canucks that will start next year.
Frank Seravalli over at Daily Faceoff has been all over this. He reported a few days ago that the two sides gained traction. Now he was first to report the specifics of the agreement. Pettersson will sign a long term deal with Vancouver while carrying an AAV of $11.6 million.
Pettersson, 25, was not a player the Canucks could afford to lose. In 62 games this season, the Canucks top line center has 75 points. That’s while coming off a 102 point season the year prior. Pettersson is a superstar in every sense of the word and a large reason why Vancouver leads the Pacific division thus far.
The former Fifth overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft will now stick around with the team that selected him. A huge development considering the circumstances. Circumstances like Canadian taxes. Obviously, Pettersson would keep a significantly bigger portion of this contract if he signed with an American team.
Credit to the entire Canucks organization. Without the turnaround led by Rick Tocchet and Jim Rutherford, there is a good chance Pettersson might be leaving. The new winning ways in Vancouver likely swayed Pettersson to stay. Vancouver certainly has a chance to hoist the Stanley Cup this year.
