The Flames cannot allow to make the Johnny Gaudreau mistake with Elias Lindholm. The Flames top line center is currently in the final year of his contract while carrying a dirt cheap $4.85 million cap hit. Calgary either needs to get Lindholm extended or find a trade partner. No in between.
In theory, the Flames should want to keep Lindholm. Number one centers don’t grow on trees. The Swedish center was a Selke finalist in 2021-22. The wheels sort of fell off for everyone with the Flames a season ago but still ranked second on the team with 64 points last year. Lindholm is part of the solution if the Flames actually want to be taken seriously as a contender.
We know that Noah Hanifin has no desire to stay with the Flames long term. However, we haven’t really gotten a clear answer on what Lindholm wants to do. It sure sounds like he’s open to staying with the Flames.
“I am willing to stay,” he told Swedish outlet Hockeysverige, as translated by Uffe Bodin. “My agent and Calgary will handle most of it. There’s a lot we have to agree on, but I’ve said that I can consider staying.”
Dear, Flames. The clock is ticking. They can’t lose this guy for nothing. Lindholm is worthy paying and it sounds like he’s open to staying in Calgary. There is no time to waste. They have to get this extension done before the start of the season. If the Flames disappoint again this season, it may be too late by then.
