Vegas Golden Knights Sign Max Comtois To PTO

The Vegas Golden Knight returns 99% of their team in an effort to try to repeat as Stanley Cup champions in 2023-24. Of course, the lone loss was Reilly Smith, whom the team parted with via trade with Pittsburgh. The VGK will rely on young players like Pavel Dorofeyev and Paul Cotter to try to fill that void. If the young guns fail, Vegas is bringing in some veteran reinforcement. The team has signed Max Comtois to a PTO.

I just recently published the season preview post for the Golden Knights. I alluded to the possibility that a move like this could be on the horizon. The only difference is I thought a reunion could be in place with Tomas Tatar. Instead, Vegas will try to get a bounce-back season out of the former Ducks second round pick in 2017.

Does Comtois suck or did he fail just being a product of an awful Ducks team? We’re about to find out. It’s very possible the Ducks should be blamed here. Look at what happened with Hampus Lindholm when he departed for Boston.

Comtois, 24, 16 goals and 33 points in 55 games during the season shortened 2020-21 campaign. In the two years since, Comtois’ stock has cratered. In 116 games since the breakout season, Comtois is a -37 with 35 total points.

Comtois isn’t untalented. He has a pretty good shot and a physical presence. Just isn’t overly skilled at actually driving the play. With better linemates in Vegas, maybe Comtois can perform better. That’s the hope anyway.

At the end of the day, it’s a smart flier by the VGK. Could Comtois become a hard hitting glue guy like Ivan Barbashev has for this team? Vegas needs help at the left winger spot and Comtois is young enough to turn his career around.
