USA Baseball’s Eddy Alvarez Will Be an Olympic Flag-Bearer

For the first time ever, one of the USA flag-bearers in the Olympic Games will be a baseball player. USA chose Eddy Alvarez, a Triple-A Marlins player, for this distinction. Fans may remember the infielder as one of the Marlins replacement players during the 2020 COVID-shortened season. Alvarez is a previous Olympian, having won a silver medal as part of the US speed skating relay team in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He became a professional baseball player that same year when the Chicago White Sox signed him to a minor-league deal. Eddy Alvarez spoke on his selection for the honor:

It is an honor and a privilege to be named as one of the flag bearers by my fellow Team USA athletes for the Opening Ceremony. Being a first-generation Cuban American, my story represents the American Dream. My family has sacrificed so much for me to have the opportunity to wave this flag proudly.

Alvarez will bear the Stars and Stripes alongside women’s basketball player Sue Bird. USA Baseball plays their opening game of the 2020 Olympics on July 30 vs. Israel. Interestingly enough, a medal from USA Baseball in Tokyo makes Alvarez the first man since 1936 to medal at both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
