Dwyane Wade Opens Up About Investing In The WNBA

Eternal class act and Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade credits his daughter for his desire to invest in the WNBA.

Back in July of 2023, the Chicago Sky announced that 3x NBA champion, Hall of Famer and Chicago native Dwyane Wade had become a minority owner of their team. Today, Wade spoke with CBS and opened up about why he made the $85 million decision.

Dwyane Wade credits his daughter as the reason he decided to invest so heavily in women’s basketball, though he maintains that he’s “always been a fan” and that he “believes” in the WNBA as an organization. Ultimately, his family is what pushed him to put the money up and become an investor. As Wade’s eldest son, Zaire, chases his dreams of becoming an NBA player, Wade realized he wanted his daughter Kaavia to have the same opportunities.

“The big part of that is that my son, Zaire, grew up and he had a dream of being in the NBA. He had a dream of being like his favorite players. You understand the importance of role models and so, I want my daughter to have that same feeling.”

The timing could not be more perfect for Dwyane Wade or the Chicago Sky. The team is riding high, a constant among top headlines in the WNBA. Much of this is owed to rookie phenom Angel Reese, whom Wade made sure to sing the praises of. The young athlete made a huge name for herself winning multiple national titles as an LSU Tiger. Wade told CBS that the rookie All-Star is “Owning it. She’s owning who she is. She wants to be great, and she wants to be a great teammate.” Wade believes that women’s sports is having its moment, and players like Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark are showing up “when the lights are the brightest.”

Dwyane Wade is only the latest entry into a class of retired sports superstars turned WNBA investors. Magic Johnson is the majority owner of the Los Angeles Sparks. Tom Brady and Alex Rodriguez have ownership stakes in the Las Vegas Aces and Minnesota Lynx, respectively. Owing to explosive growth and popularity, the WNBA is set to expand with teams in the Bay Area and Toronto. Perhaps people like Dwyane Wade will find themselves as early investors in a growing trend.
