The Milwaukee Bucks extended general manager Jon Horst to a multi-year deal, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Thursday.
The amount of years that have been tacked on to Horst’s deal has not been confirmed.
Horst, 42, has been with the Bucks’ organization since the 2007-08 season. He was promoted from director of basketball operations to general manager ahead of the 2017-18 season, winning the Executive of the Year award in 2018-19 followed by the franchise’s first NBA title in half a century in 2020-21.
The Bucks have made the postseason in all eight seasons under Horst’s guidance, though they are staring down the barrel of their third consecutive first-round elimination.
To Horst’s credit, he was able to duck under the second apron ahead of the 2024-25 trade deadline. But he hasn’t drafted particularly well in recent years, nor has he surrounded Giannis Antetokounmpo with elite-level talent outside of Damian Lillard–which came at the expense of Jrue Holiday.
If the Bucks are somehow about to course-correct and get younger while building a strong contender with Antetokounmpo still in the building, then this is more than justified. Doing that is an unrealistic expectation, but crazier things have happened.
The reality is that time is ticking on the two-time MVP’s future in Milwaukee. Lillard isn’t getting any younger, is coming off a blood clot and they have an OK foundation of young players in AJ Green and Andre Jackson Jr., but it’s nothing to ride home about.
What do you think about Horst’s multi-year extension? Let us know in the comments.
