Drew Brees

The New Orleans Saints hammered the Bucs in Week 1, so all is well, right? New Orleans may have won 34-23, but Drew Brees couldn’t have looked worse. Sure, the Saints offense scored many points, but it’s impossible not to be concerned about the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

You may be thinking to yourself – “Trey, how can you be concerned about a team that scored 34 points”? I’ll tell you why: Drew Brees looked like garbage, flaming hot trash. There’s no other way to put it.

Brees doesn’t pass the eye test anymore. Brees has lost all of his arm strength. Brees can win with his mind, but he is physically shot. The man has NOTHING left.

The stats back it up. Brees averaged 4.6 air yards per attempt and 2.1 completed air yards per attempt. The latter number was by far the worst mark in the NFL for Week 1.

New Orleans is not going to win ball games playing all 16 the way Brees did in Week 1. Brees has faded hard during the final weeks of the 2018 and 2019 season. If Brees looks like this already, what happens 12 weeks from now?

I’m telling you this right now, Jameis Winston and or Taysom Hill will start a meaningful game for New Orleans this year. When and how many remains the question. Brees could easily be the third-best quarterback on the roster right now. From a pure arm strength standpoint, it’s not a question anymore.

The Saints can no longer win a Super Bowl with Drew Brees as it’s starting quarterback. Remember, Brees is locked into a broadcasting job after this season. Regardless of how the rest of the season goes, this is Brees’ last run.
