Ever heard the phrase ‘Don’t Poke The Bear’!?! Well apparently the Arizona Coyote haven’t. If they have they certainly didn’t pay attention, as in game three of their first round series on Saturday they did just that. The results were not pretty. After beating the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 to cut the series deficit in half, the Coyotes got absolutely mauled in games four and five as the Avalanche won the series 4-1 on Wednesday night in Edmonton.
The Coyotes had the second best defensive record during the regular season, only beaten out by the Dallas Stars. They were also out-shot by the Nashville Predators during all four of their Qualifying series games, but managed to come through with a 3-1 win. Unfortunately for the Coyotes their prize for that win was a date with the Colorado Avalanche, and it went as badly as expected.
Nathan MacKinnon has said a number of times this season that for the first time since he was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2013 he feels like they have a chance to win it all. The last two performances against the Coyotes have done nothing to Make anyone think any differently.
During my first round previews I predicted the Colorado Avalanche to win in five, which is exactly what happened. Admittedly that’s the only one I’m getting right so don’t take betting advice from me. It was mostly my heart talking as an Avalanche fan, but I felt if we got the shots Nashville did we could win. I DID NOT expect what happened in games four and five, however, especially after the tough loss in game three.
The Avalanche future looks bright
To then go and DESTROY a defensively sound team 7-1 not once but TWICE is not showboating. It’s sending a message. WE ARE FOR REAL! And the NHL better be ready! Don’t poke the bear! You won’t like the results.
