Don’t Make Any Steelers WRs a Priority in Fantasy Football in 2022

The receiving corps for the Pittsburgh Steelers looks dramatically different from a year ago. Losing JuJu Smith-Schuster to Kansas City means there was a hole to fill and did Pittsburgh ever fill that hole. The Steelers went out and drafted George Pickens and Calvin Austin, bringing much-needed speed to this offense. The reason you shouldn’t make it a priority to draft any of these Steelers receivers during fantasy football in 2022 isn’t them, it’s the quarterback situation.

As a Steelers fan myself, and one of two at Vendetta Sports Media, I was not thrilled with the decision to sign Mitch Trubisky or draft Kenny Pickett. While I am trying to be optimistic about this, I would be lying if I said this is where I thought this team would go after Big Ben retired. Nonetheless, from a fantasy perspective, neither Trubisky nor Pickett is going to light the world on fire. I would honestly be shocked if any Steelers receiver had more than 70 catches this year. I do think that TE Pat Freiermuth will take a massive leap this season, but we are focused on this receiving corps today. These guys will get open, but the issue is getting them the ball.

The two options that come to mind for the Steelers in fantasy football in 2022 are Diontae Johnson and George Pickens. If you are going to draft any two receivers from this team, it goes in that order. Johnson is the clear No. 1 on this team now, and Pickens should easily take the No. 2 spot simply because Chase Claypool sucks. I tried to make sense of him last year, and he let me down. A sleeper, late-round guy to grab, especially in dynasty leagues is Calvin Austin.

I want to reiterate here that NO Steelers receivers should be made a priority to draft in fantasy football in 2022. I promise, the idea of grabbing one early as a “steal” will not equal the production you desire. However, show a little patience. If some of these guys start to fall past their projections, I don’t hate the idea of scooping one of them up. Just be mindful of who the starting QB is that week, and plan accordingly.
