Kristaps Porzingis has been traded to the Celtics but is he actually in their long term plans? Does Porzingis consider the Celtics a place he’d like to play for? It appears the answer to both of those questions is a resounding yes.
Porzingis is eligible to sign a two-year, $77 million contract extension. That extension can be signed as early as July 6th. All indications point to that happening.
“When the three-team deal for Porzingis was being finalized last week, there was nothing stopping Porzingis’s camp from expressing its desire to be in Boston long term; according to a league source — and they did,” The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reported Sunday.
NBA reporter Marc Stein reported that an extension is expected to take place and continued by saying that Porzingis considered the Celtics his preferred landing spot. Had Porzingis opted out of his contract, the Jazz were expected to make a serious play for his services. Given those options, it appears Porzingis preferred taking his talents to Boston.
Porzingis, 27, is coming off a career best season with Washington. The former 4th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this past year. It’s an enormous upgrade in the front court for the Celtics. Given Rob Williams’ injury history and Al Horford aging in dog years, this move raises the ceiling of this Celtics team.
We’ll see what the rest of this offseason holds for the Celtics. Given the fact that Boston also acquired four second round picks and a 2024 first round pick via Golden State, Brad Stevens may not be done making moves. Hopefully, that includes Malcolm Brogdon being shipped out for a more reliable option.
