Karma sucks, doesn’t it? ESPN threw Jeff Van Gundy on the street over the Summer and replaced him with Doc Rivers. A few months into the 2023-24 NBA Season… turmoil has struck. Doc Rivers is back coaching after taking the Bucks job and ESPN is left empty-handed.
Does ESPN regret hiring Doc? You bet they do. The most hilarious part of this whole thing is they claimed to have fired Van Gundy because they were afraid he’d leave for a head coaching job. Something that seems odd considering that Van Gundy hasn’t been a head coach in the NBA since 2007. Instead, the karma gods intervened in the most hilarious way possible and it was Doc who left in that exact same fashion.
You can’t make it up if you tried. Karma is very real.
With Doc out, it appears that ESPN is rolling with a two-person booth of Mike Breen and Doris Burke for the rest of the season. Was all of this really worth getting rid of Van Gundy and Mark Jackson for? ESPN looks so foolish here and got caught with their pants down. With all the chaos going on in the sports media world, this is just that added humor we all needed. What a complete joke.
Van Gundy has since taken a job with the Celtics. Maybe ESPN begs him to come back. I’m just not sure that’s going to be the case with someone as prideful as Van Gundy. I’m sure it’s really fun sitting back and watching this 34-10 Celtics team that leads the NBA with the best winning percentage in the league.
