Panthers Hire Dave Canales As New Head Coach
The Panthers have found their next head coach and they will be tasking the guy who resurrected Baker Mayfield’s career to help save the franchise. Carolina has tabbed Buccanneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as the new head coach.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:
This move isn’t overly surprising. We knew the Panthers wanted to pair a rising offensive mind with Bryce Young. Given that Carolina plays Tampa twice a year, they got a pretty good look at Canales. Baker Mayfield had the best season of his career under Canales posting a 28-10 TD to INT ratio. The 28 touchdown passes were a career high. So was his 64.3% completion percentage. Tampa’s run to the playoffs certainly didn’t hurt his case.
This is a huge loss for Tampa. If Todd Bowles doesn’t find another good offensive coordinator, he might kiss his own job goodbye. It’s just a reality of the business.
Canales, 42, doesn’t have any head coaching experience. He only has two years of experience being an offensive coordinator. One for Seattle and this past year in Tampa. Canales might be a good coach but is he ready for this opportunity?
Winning in Carolina won’t be easy. They had the worst record in the league this year and don’t even have their own draft pick. Plus, their owner seems like a big-time crybaby. Good luck to Canales. He has his work cut out for him. He doesn’t exactly have the most talent to work with either.
