There is a giant elephant in the room and if nobody else is going to talk about it… then I will. Is anybody going to acknowledge that Brock Purdy has played like trash in both rain games he played this year? Is anybody watching the games? Is everybody else just going to ignore the serious red flags here?
Purdy, 24, was terrific this year for the most part sporting a TD-to-INT ratio of 31-11 with a 69.4% completion rate. We just also have to be honest about it. San Francisco should have lost to Green Bay in the Divisional Round. Purdy also played like garbage against the Browns. The only two rain games Purdy played in all year.
Purdy didn’t even try to hide it. He said that he struggled with the rain. It was pretty obvious watching the game this past week that he genuinely struggled to grip the football.
“There were sometimes where I’m dropping back and the ball was a little wet from the grass, and it sort of affected some accuracy and stuff,” Purdy said, per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. “But that’s football, so I’ve got to be better in that area.”
Purdy isn’t the only quarterback in the world who stinks when the weather isn’t ideal. Derek Carr also raised his hand in this department. It just has to be concerning that Purdy doesn’t seem to have any ability to create drives in the rain. Seems like a problem…
There was also no question that Purdy looked like the worst quarterback remaining out of the eight that played in the Divisional Round. It’s a really nice story and Purdy deserves credit for executing the offense but let’s also please be real with the overall talent level. Landing spots are crucial and ending up on a team with Kyle Shanahan, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Trent Williams certainly helps.
Purdy should be thanking the heavens that he plays in Santa Clara, California most of the time. A place that has ideal weather pretty much all the time. Imagine if Purdy were drafted by a cold-weather team. I’m not trying to pick on Purdy. He’s had a really good year for the most part. All I’m asking is that we please get our expectations in line for what this guy is. That is all.
