Trea Turner signed a monster free agent contract with the Phillies this Summer. It was well known that Turner preferred to sign with an east coast team. I guess we all assumed that’s why Turner never re-signed with the Dodgers despite the fact that he was a great player for them. It turns out that they never even really tried to keep him.
Turner spoke with reporters recently about interactions the Dodgers had with him this past offseason. Let’s just say they were non-existent.
“I entertained one West Coast team (the San Diego Padres), I definitely would’ve entertained another,” Turner told reporters including Claudia Gestro. “Especially one that I enjoyed and played at and was familiar with.”
He added, “I thought they would be on me, they weren’t, but it would’ve been definitely my top few teams.”
“They told me they would be there in free agency and have conversations, but then once free agency opened, (we) didn’t have too much contact … one or two phone calls for the two months or so,” he said.
Turner, 29, signed an 11-year contract worth $300 million. It seems pretty clear that the Dodgers didn’t want another big contract on the books. With Mookie Betts also signed to a larger $300 million plus deal, it’s fair to question how many of those you can carry on your books.
The shortstop position also looks like a black hole for the Dodgers and they aren’t the same team without him. Gavin Lux tore his ACL prior to the year putting a damper on the infield plans.
