Do The Yankees View Spencer Jones As Untouchable?
Corbin Burnes was traded to the Orioles, but it sure sounds like the Yankees really wanted him. It also sounds like the Yankees could have had Burnes. They just weren’t willing to part with outfield prospect Spencer Jones in order to do it.
Do the Yankees view Jones as an untouchable prospect? If you follow the tea leaves, that certainly appears to be the case.
“They did try to get Corbin Burnes,” Martino said. “I know they were disappointed that they didn’t.”
VIA New York Post’s Jon Heyman:
“The Yankees were certainly in on Burnes. My understanding is that Milwaukee, like the White Sox, wanted Spencer Jones,” Heyman said. “People love Spencer Jones… Jones, I think, was a key for the Yankees and they didn’t want to give him up.”
The Orioles ended up landing Burnes for a package that included DL Hall, Joey Ortiz, and the 34th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Oh, and Aaron Boone straight-up admitted that he was scared of the O’s after the trade. Was Jones really worth hanging onto?
Jones, 22, slashed .267/.336/.444 with 16 homers between High-A and Double-A. He was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt. His 6-foot-6 frame isn’t much different from when Aaron Judge was in the minor league system. Not saying Jones is the next Judge. Just that there are definitely reasons to be excited about him. Time will tell how Jones pans out.
