If you were expecting Diontae Johnson to light it up after he was traded to Baltimore, you played yourself. The good news is if you read this site frequently, you already knew I tried to warn you that Johnson would likely be a non-factor with the Ravens in terms of fantasy production.
Word on the street is now that the Ravens never planned for Johnson to have a large role with the team. Rashod Bateman and Zay Flowers are the starters. Johnson will get some looks in three wide receiver sets but that is about it.
“Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken basically acknowledged last week that they’re having a tough time finding ways to involve Diontae Johnson in the offense,” Graziano wrote.
“The sense I got was that they considered him too good a player to pass up at the price Carolina was asking,” Graziano wrote. “And that he offered them a chance to use more three-receiver sets than they usually do, should they want to go that route. But that’s not really the way their offense is set up. And unless the Ravens are planning a major midseason scheme change (which I don’t believe they are), Johnson might just be a veteran insurance policy in case something happens to top wideout Zay Flowers.”
Nobody should be surprised by this for a number of different reasons:
A: The Ravens gave up nothing to add Johnson. Literally nothing. The gap between the Ravens 5th round pick and Carolina’s 6th round pick might end up being five spots in the draft?
B: The guy isn’t good. When has Mike Tomlin been wrong about moving off a receiver? We’re talking about a former third round pick from Toledo. Johnson has never been a guy who tilts the field. He’s always had drop issues and never finds a way into the end zone on a consistent basis. It’s who he is.
C: Injuries happens. If Johnson ends up being a nice insurance policy, so be it. Just make sure your expectations are in line for what those actually are.
