Did The Celtics Almost Hire JJ Redick?
JJ Redick has been thriving in the sports media game but he continues to flirt with the idea of coaching. The former Duke product interviewed for the Raptors’ head coaching job this offseason. It turned out, the Celtics almost hired him too.
Joe Mazzulla was a recent guest on Redick’s podcast. I’m not going to spell out the name of the show because it needs a serious name change and is lame AF. Anyway… it was revealed that Mazzulla tried really hard to get Redick added to the staff.
“You tried to convince me to join the staff,” Redick said. “I feel like most of that 4 1/2 hour round and the subsequent lunch was us talking about what my role would be.”
“I thought we had a chance at getting you,” Mazzulla responded. “We go through the clubhouse to walk out and you’re like, ‘When does training camp start?’ I was like, ‘Monday.’ And it was Friday. This guy put all of his thought into coaching and he doesn’t even know when the season starts.”
“I wasn’t wasting your time,” Redick recalled. “I gave it some serious thought and when (you) called me when Damon (Stoudamire) left in the middle of the season. I gave that some serious thought, too.”
The Celtics totally reshaped their coaching staff this year under Mazzulla. Sam Cassell is probably the most notable addition to the staff. The roster has also been shaken up with the additions of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. There are probably worse jobs in the NBA than being an assistant for that team.
I wonder if Redick will ever actually enter the coaching game. I’d probably lean towards no but you never know. Does he really want to give the podcasting stuff up? He probably makes a lot of money doing it and never has to leave his couch. The longer time goes on, the more likely Redick probably sticks to staying in the media.
