What version of Paul Goldschmidt are the Yankees getting in 2025? Goldy signed a one-year, $12.5 million deal with New York this offseason. The bad news is that it certainly feels likely the Yanks are getting damaged goods and a player who is well past his prime.
Goldschmidt, 37, had a Zoom call with reporters after he signed with the Bronx Bombers. He had some concerning comments during it where he essentially admitted he got exposed last year and was a total shell of himself.
“I didn’t play well most of the year, and there are no excuses for that,” Goldschmidt said Thursday on a Zoom call.
“Things I did wrong got exposed,” Goldschmidt said. “I wasn’t hitting pitches that most of my career I had been able to connect on.”
“Something was a little off, and I created bad habits,” Goldschmidt said. “It took me a while to get back to a good position to hit. … It took me longer than it ever has to get back to it.”
Doesn’t this feel like when the Yankees acquired Josh Donaldson well past his prime with a sprinkle of Anthony Rizzo mixed in? The Wilmington, Deleware native hit a career worst .245 last season. His 2022 homers are his lowest mark since 2014 excluding the 2020 season where he played 58 games. Is he really going to turn things around another year older?
After losing Juan Soto, the Yankees are going to need Goldschmidt to rebound. I wish them luck with that, especially after these comments. It sure sounds like a guy closer to retirement than the peak of his career.
