Dick Vitale Diagnosed with Lymphoma

Longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale has been diagnosed with lymphoma. He made the announcement on Monday via ESPN Front Row. This is Vitale’s second cancer diagnosis in the span of a few months; he received treatment for melanoma back in August.

The 82-year-old ESPN mainstay had this to say in his release:

I had announced in August that I underwent multiple surgeries to remove melanoma (which has been totally cleared), yet the doctors believe this lymphoma diagnosis is unrelated. What’s evident is that the treatment plan for this lymphoma is going to be a lot tougher, and in both cases, early detection played an important role in helping to manage the cancers.

Vitale’s Treatment Plan

Vitale also relayed that the treatment plan for his lymphoma is six months of chemotherapy with a regimen of steroids. Doctors have told him that it has a 90% cure rate. Vitale said he feels “lucky and blessed” to have great doctors and the support of his family. He closed his announcement with the following:

If you see me, please just give me a fist bump and say a prayer that I can return from being 82 years old to acting like I’m 12. Thanks so much for your love.

Vitale has been with ESPN since just four months after the network’s inception in 1979. He is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and has supported the V Foundation for Cancer Research for many years. He plans to schedule treatments around his broadcasting work for the upcoming season. Dicky V’s contract with ESPN runs through the 2022-23 college basketball season.
