Is this the next Chris Johnson? That might be a strong comp for Devon Achane, but for the first time in a long time, we have a back entering the league with real game breaking speed. Achane isn’t quite Johnson but the Texas A&M back is a lightning rod people should be really excited about. Let’s check out the 2023 NFL Draft Profile for Devon Achane!
Speed. It all starts there with Achane. It’s pure rocket fuel and it’s just on a different level compared to other backs in the draft. Achane clocked in with a 4.32 at the combine which is just blazing. Achane was even asked to return kicks for the Aggies. We saw more than once during his college career that this dude simply has game breaking speed. You can’t teach it.
Yes, Achane is an undersized back (5-foot-9, 185). You’re not going to ask this guy to pound the rock 30 times a game. He’s going to have to be part of a committee. However, the thing I always appreciated about Achane was how efficient he is. This isn’t just a home run guy that strikes out a lot. Achane averaged 6.4 yards per carry during his college career, which is obviously a really high mark. He does just fine running between the tackles.
No concerns about catching the ball. Has soft has and the receiving production is there. Achane is also a former 4-star recruit and was first team all-SEC this past year. Despite all the chaos at Texas A&M, Achane is a true game breaker in every sense of the word.
How high do you take a running back? The good news is it doesn’t appear that you will have to really reach for Achane. Can you snag this guy in the 3rd or 4th round? Achane isn’t just a pure running back either. He can return kicks and also function as a passing weapon or even take fly sweeps to the house. I’m in on Achane and you should be too.
