Deshaun Watson Has Some Serious Question Marks Regarding His Character
Deshaun Watson is an unquestionably talented quarterback. The former Clemson standout threw for 33 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and over 4,800 yards for a disastrous Houston Texans team in 2020. However, it is off the field where many concerns lie. Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores stated his desire for “high-character” players in the midst of trade rumors for the disgruntled QB. At the time of writing, Watson has been accused of sexual assault by 22 different women. The NFL and Houston Police are still investigating these claims and there is a chance he may not even play in 2021.
He is a great player no doubt. However, he is nowhere near the high character type of player Flores reportedly desires. Despite all the off-the-field attention, Watson is still heavily involved in trade rumors. The Philadelphia Eagles appear to remain interested along with the Dolphins and other suitors. A trade to Miami, however, seems increasingly possible. Reports have surfaced that Watson is not interested in waiving his no-trade clause if it meant joining the Eagles. He would waive it for teams like the Dolphins or Carolina Panthers.
On-Field Success vs. Off-Field Drama
It shouldn’t matter how good of a teammate Watson is. Talent aside, he appears to have made some serious mistakes. It is no coincidence when 22 separate lawsuits are filed against someone if you ask me. Watson could sit out an extended period of time if found guilty. He already has seemed to do so in order to force his way out of Houston. If a team trades for Watson, it has the potential to give them a huge black eye. Rewarding behavior like this is a backward type of thinking. He is of course, innocent until proven guilty. There seems to be a long road ahead before a serious outcome occurs.
Not The End Of The World For The Fins
Brian Flores and the Dolphins should not even be concerned if they miss out on Watson. They should focus on giving Tua Tagovailoa another full season before making any decisions. With a young and promising quarterback combined with plenty of draft capital, they are capable of making a very big trade. There is little doubt that Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers would also love to play in Miami. Regardless, giving up on Tua so soon after using the 5th overall pick to draft him could be a mistake. A good selection of weapons and an improved offensive line could be the keys to making him a star in the NFL. The Miami Dolphins can certainly live without Deshaun Watson and find an actual high-character quarterback.
