I tried to warn you this was coming. Derek Stingley Jr has become the best cornerback in the NFL and now he’s being paid like it too. The former LSU product just inked a monster extension with the Texans to become the highest paid corner in league history.
Adam Schefter of ESPN had the details:
It’s a three year deal worth $90 million. Basically all of it is guaranteed ($89 million). The $30 million AAV basically breaks the cornerback market.
Stingley, 23, is coming off a season where he was named first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler. When you notch 18 passes defended with five interceptions while swallowing everyone you cover, I’d say that’s pretty worthy of those accolades. An opposing quarterback’s 51.2 passer rating against him in coverage says everything you need to know.
As I mentioned before, this shatters the CB market. Jaycee Horn was the previous ring leader after signing a $25 million AAV earlier this offseason. This number shatters that. I guess the only thing you can say about the deal is why the Texans didn’t push for more length on the contract. Time flies and by the time you get your money’s worth, he’s going to need another new contract. We’re talking about a guy who was a first round pick during the 2023 NFL Draft. Houston should have pushed to make this a five year deal. That would be my only complaint with what happened here. Otherwise, he’s a franchise cornerstone and there’s no way around it.
