Anyone that knows me, knows 2 things: I’m a Raiders fan and I’m a believer in Derek Carr. Last year, I said Derek Carr might be a top 10 fantasy QB. I wasn’t far off, but it wasn’t true. Derek Carr ended up finishing 13th as a fantasy QB. The Raider’s offense was great where they finished in the top 10. The offensive weapons are actually better this year, but that doesn’t mean Derek Carr will be a better fantasy QB.
Let’s look at a couple of things to explain why that is. 1. The biggest, or one of the biggest criticisms this year was the O-Line being depleted. Depleted is a slight overreaction but let’s go with the general public’s thinking. The Raiders lost Rodney Hudson, Gabe Jackson, and Trent Brown. Trent Brown hardly ever played for the Raiders so people really over-exaggerate his worth to the Raiders. But the losses of Gabe Jackson and Rodney Hudson will hurt. Instead of being a top 5-10 line, this line is probably top 10-15 now. It’s still a great O Line, however, Carr might have to deal with more pressure this year.
2. The Raider’s defense WILL be better. Any way you slice it, I have no idea how the Raiders have a worse defense this year. It’ll be pretty hard to be worse than 30th in the league. With Gus Bradley and new additions like Yannick Ngakoue, this team will at least be better than 30th. Yes, the bar is set that low. This will give Derek Carr fewer opportunities to throw the ball. He won’t have to throw to keep up or build a lead. Especially in Jon Gruden’s West Coast offense, his potential to be a top 10 fantasy QB is low. The Raider’s defense might actually help them beat teams (shocker I know). Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch though.
It’s not looking hopeful for Carr to be one of the better fantasy QBs. I think the Raider’s offense will be good, but Derek Carr might see even more game managing than he has before. His team is better, they won’t need him to throw as much to keep them in games. The defense MIGHT, HOPEFULLY, help the Raiders this year. Time will tell though.
