Denzel Mims wants a fresh start. The third-year receiver has requested a trade, per his agent Ron Slavin. Check out where things stand according to Ian Rapoport:
It’s hard not to see things from Mims’ point of view. It seems he is simply getting shoved down the depth chart. With the likes of Braxton Berrios, Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis, and Elijah Moore in the Jets’ receiving room, touches will come at a premium. Despite putting in a lot of work this offseason, it seems like turning a new page is in the best interest of both parties. With and without Zach Wilson, it didn’t appear that Mims had much going for him in New York. The former second rounder was not given much of a chance, especially with only EIGHT receptions in the 11 games he played in 2021. He is far from the next big thing at wide receiver, but the Jets clearly did him no favors here.
Now, the Jets and GM Joe Douglas will have to find the best value they can right before the start of the season. It’s hard to place a true value on Mims. There will probably be a number of suitors outside of New York that could use another weapon. Would rebuilding teams like the Texans or Lions want to give him a try? Elsewhere, how about contenders like Baltimore or Green Bay? A mid-round pick probably gets the job done here.
As Trey said in his pre-draft analysis in 2020, the build and physical numbers are not half-bad. 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds is pretty good. Furthermore, a 4.38 40-yard dash and 38.5-inch vertical are solid. However, he struggles running routes and consistently catching the ball, hence a career catch percentage of 46.3%. With the right play callers and quarterback, I’m sure Mims could carve himself a role somewhere in an NFL offense. While he’s not perfect, he was not given the best chance to succeed from the get-go. All in all, the Jets have yet another fiasco to deal with as they head into an important 2022 season. The Zach Wilson injury scare was already a haymaker to deal with.
