R2C2 Podcast Leaving The Ringer After Friction With Bill Simmons

Bill Simmons finds himself in the news again! In case you missed it, yesterday Matthew Berry had some interesting quotes on the show about ESPN. Today, another shoe drops at The Ringer. The R2C2 Podcast hosted by CC Sabathia and Ryan Ruocco left The Ringer but now we know why.

The NY Post had the story. Apparently, the R2C2 show is leaving the network after Sabathia and Simmons had a bit of a bickering match:

“The “R2C2” podcast with CC Sabathia and Ryan Ruocco left The Ringer several months ago.

The Post has learned that the parting of ways happened amid some friction between Sabathia and Ringer founder Bill Simmons, in addition to some shifting strategy at the company.

Sources said that the friction with “R2C2” came when Simmons sought to provide some coaching tips for the podcast, and Sabathia was not appreciative of the feedback.

With regards to the shifting strategy, a Ringer spokesperson told The Post, “Bill and the whole Ringer team enjoyed working with the ‘R2C2’ team and are appreciative of their time together. This year, the Ringer made a strategic decision to move away from baseball-focused podcasts, instead covering the sport as part of our city-specific sports podcasts.”

Coaching points? Uh oh. There are only two real things that need to be discussed. Did Simmons approach Sabathia with the coaching points because he thought their show stunk? OR did he do the coaching points because the view numbers weren’t there? Maybe it’s a mixture of both.

Either way, I’m sure Sabathia didn’t take the message kindly. Nobody wants to be shown up. Especially if it’s coming from a guy that spends his entire day getting horny off the NBA trade machine. If Simmons doesn’t know the rookie extension eligible rule in the NBA, who is he to tell Sabathia how to run his baseball show?

Ryen Russillo remains the only capable employee at The Ringer. This post contains a rant of his about Magic Johnson.

Sabathia now marks the second high-profile athlete to leave The Ringer. former NBA shooting guard JJ Redick was the first but that break up had a lot to do with the IP address of the podcast itself. It’s safe to say Redick is doing just fine without Simmons. It remains to be seen what other ventures Sabathia will take next.
