Dear, John Henry
I want to first start out by saying thank you. Thank you for all of the memories growing up as a kid. Thank you for 2004. I learned that anything is possible. If Curt Schilling can do what he did in 2004, then I can do anything.
Thank you for 2007. I was just about to enter high school then and was totally lost. It didn’t matter, I had the Red Sox. No matter how unlikely things looked, if they could pull through then I could.
Thank you for 2013. I watched an entire city rise from darkness after the Boston Marathon bombing. I watched David Ortiz do the impossible again. If that happened WTF was my excuse?
Thank you for 2018. God, that was a perfect storm. All of the young players popped at once and Trader Dave dropped his nuts at the perfect time. I don’t care what anybody says, that’s the most dominant team in MLB history. I attended the parade and will never forget that season.
As we observe the here and now, we both know the truth. This team is lost. I’m not blaming you. You’re a good owner and winning over an extended period of time is hard. You broke the curse, have won more titles than any other franchise in baseball since taking over, and the Yankees are a laughing stock.
You’re 73. You’re entering the final stage of your life. Not saying you’re dying anytime soon but now isn’t the time to be playing games. I’m not blaming you for what happened. Just know that I’m on your side.
Dave Dombrowski deserved to be fired. We both know it. He’s great in a win-now spot but his approach is never sustainable. The Tigers still suck. He has no concept of how to develop young talent. Had Dombrowski remained in charge, the Sox would have been older, more expensive, and stuck.
You did what any rational person would do. You hired the guy that would fix the problems that Dombrowski left behind. Chaim Bloom did what you hired him to do. I’ll be the first to admit; I’m not a fan of Bloom. However, no one can deny that the young talent the Sox have amassed under his watch is impressive.
You and I also know the truth. Chaim Bloom has a clam between his legs and he’s never going to win at the MLB level. It’s been four years now and if the Sox finish slow down the stretch it will be three last place finishes. The first one wasn’t his fault. The last two will be. We don’t need to go over every detail on all of the mistakes he’s made but two consecutive duds at the trade deadline says a lot about his DNA. Guy gets horny off of making waiver claims but doesn’t have the stones to build a real contender.
Let me do what I was born to do. Let me make sure the final stage of your life is built with success. I can get you that next championship team in Boston and there isn’t a more qualified person for the job. All of the pieces are in place to turn this thing around quickly.
When you fire Bloom this year, I want an interview. I am throwing my hat in the ring. I can have a two-hour presentation at your earliest convenience. I’m not just the mind that this team needs. I’m the leader that this team needs and already have a team in place to make sure that this organization pisses excellence from the top down. I just need an opportunity and I’ll take care of the rest. Just know you can’t do better. That’s not being arrogant. It’s just the truth.
