De’Aaron Fox traded to Spurs in multi-team deal

It’s officially official! The Sacramento Kings have traded All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in a multi-team deal, according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania.

According to Charania, the deal is a three-team trade that will send Zach LaVine, three first-round picks and three second-round picks to Sacramento as part of the deal; Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter and one first-rounder get sent back to Chicago while Spurs get just De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin.

Not long after it was reported this week that the Sacramento Kings were listening deals for Fox was it reported that his preferred landing spot was San Antonio. Now, he will be paired with Victor Wembanyama as well as Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle–which is an excellent foundation while the team maintains plenty of draft capital in hopes of pulling off a bigger move.

For the season, Fox, 27, is averaging 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals on 46.9 percent shooting and 32.2 percent from 3-point range on 6.4 attempts per game. The 6-foot-3 guard is one of the best pick-and-roll players in the NBA–grading out in the 78th percentile or better the last three seasons in the pick-and-roll, according to NBA.com’s Synergy tracking data. He’s also excellent pressuring the rim and generating open looks for his teammates.

As for the Kings, getting essentially two firsts–Charlotte’s 2025 lottery-protected pick will turn into two seconds–and five seconds isn’t nothing, but it doesn’t make up for the fact that they didn’t land a foundational young piece for Fox. They also didn’t get their 2031 pick back after trading it as an unprotected swap for DeRozan.

Now, we get to see DeRozan and LaVine reunited after spending multiple years together for a perpetually mediocre Bulls team.
