To say that the DC Extended Universe, or DCEU, is in a rough patch would be an understatement. Between a varying quality of films, controversy-riddled stars, and further interruptions in front of and behind the camera, the DCEU is in a rut. The primary competitor to the juggernaut that is the MCU has been performing well below expectations. However, director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have announced a new slate of films and shows as part of an overall reboot to the franchise.
On Jan. 31, Gunn and Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, announced six movies and five shows to be a part of a new “DCU.” In order to further rebrand away from the DCEU. The list of new films includes a movie about Superman in his early days as a hero, as opposed to an origin story; a movie about the Bat Family titled The Brave and the Bold; a Supergirl film, Swamp Thing, The Authority; and finally, a sequel to the popular and successful The Batman.
As for the shows they range from a Green Lantern detective story simply titled Lanterns, to an origin for the Amazons of Themyscira, Paradise Lost. A full list of the shows and movies announced can be found here.
Clearly, Gunn and Safran have a lot on their plates regarding the future of this franchise. Their list of projects are both ambitious and risky. Potentially, under the guidance of Gunn and Safran, this new DCU will both preform well at the box office and avoid the controversies and mistakes of the DCEU.
Only time can tell if this reboot can turn DC’s silver screen prospects around. Personally, I want to be optimistic for this new DCEU. But from Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad, Justice League, Wonder Woman 1984 and more, I’m finding it difficult to bring out that optimism. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong and Gunn and Safran will finally bring about a DC film franchise fans can be proud of.
