Dan Quinn Named Washington Commanders Head Coach

The final NFL head coaching vacancy has been filled. The Washington Commanders are set to hire Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to be the team’s next head coach, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

Quinn led the Dallas Cowboys defense to a ton of regular season success. The unit finished the 2023 regular season as the fifth-ranked defense in yards and points allowed per game. The issue was that the Cowboys gave up 48 points in a loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs.

Quinn previously spent five seasons as the Atlanta Falcons head coach. In his time at the helm, he finished with a 43-42 record. The peak of his success came in 2016 when the Falcons made the Super Bowl. It should be noted that success came with Kyle Shanahan as the team’s offensive coordinator.

The Commander’s head search reportedly came down to Quinn, Mike Macdonald, Ben Johnson, and Aaron Glenn, among others. Ultimately, Macdonald went to Seattle, Johnson elected to stay in Detroit, and Quinn beat out the other candidates.

With a new ownership group in place, the Commanders will lean on Quinn and newly hired general manager Adam Peters to turn things around in Washington.

The NFL head coach carousel is now concluded assuming no late firings take place. The carousel left several credentialed head coaches without a job, however. That includes top-tier coaches Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and Pete Carroll. Furthermore, several highly respected up-and-coming coordinators stayed in place.
