Cowboys to release Ezekiel Elliot t

The Cowboys have announced that three-time Pro Bowler Ezekiel Elliott will be released. It will be designated as a post-June first move. This news was first reported on by Jordan Shultz.

This move doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, especially after the Cowboys Franchise tagged Tony Pollard. With likely intentions to resign him to a longer-term contract. With the emergence of Tony Pollard, we have seen Ezekiel Elliott’s snap count dwindle more and more each season.

The former Buckeye used to be one of the most feared running backs in the league. Zeke Rushed for 1631 yards with 15 TDs in just his first season. Zeke then rushed for over 1000 yards in two of the next three seasons with a suspension preventing him from hitting that mark in 2017.

It’s been clear in recent years that Ezekiel Elliot has lost a step or two. Last season he barely hit the 1000-yard threshold and averaged a measly 3.8 yards per carry. With Tony Pollard playing as well as he has, it was no surprise that he started to take over the role as the starting running back slowly.

Now that’s not to say that Ezekiel Elliott will have no value for a team. He can still be a great goal line/short yardage back as evidenced by his 12 rushing tds last season. But for the price the Cowboys were paying it was clear that Elliot just wasn’t cutting it.

Zeke was paid as one of the top backs in the league and the production just wasn’t matching up with the price. The Cowboys will save $10.9 million by cutting Ezekiel Elliot. Those funds will likely use that money to further improve their roster.

I’m sure this is a move that is very bittersweet for Cowboys fans. He gave you guys a lot of great moments and memories. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. He personally haunted me as an Eagles fan, where he seemed to play his best games. But I’m sure many Cowboy fans are happy to have the extra $10 million in cap space.
