The Trey Lance nightmare is finally over in San Francisco. Hey, at least the 49ers found a way to trade three first round picks for a middle round pick. Now that’s some trade fail cheese right there.
The Cowboys are the new landing spot for the former North Dakota State quarterback. Lance is being sent to Dallas for a 4th round pick.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:
I just did a post on what Lance’s trade value might be. I’m not sure I would have given up a 6th rounder for him. The truth of the matter is, the guy is just not ready to play at all. These details haven’t come out yet but I’m not sure how much of the contract San Francisco is retaining. His contract was a problem and I’m just not sure I would have been willing to trade for the guy on his number. Plus, he’s an automatic decline when the 5th year option comes.
On the surface, Dallas actually isn’t a bad landing spot. The Cowboys needed a different backup quarterback. Cooper Rush has a winning record in spot duty, but was 58% last year with a five to three TD to INT ratio in 5 starts in 2022. Lance makes a lot of sense as an additional backup option. Plus, there is absolutely no pressure to play in 2023 with Dak Prescott in house. However, Lance does represent a possible long term option at the position when Dallas decides they don’t want to pay Dak anymore.
It was time to rip the bandaid off. Once Sam Darnold won the backup job, there was no point in having Lance on the roster. It’s become too toxic at this point. Lance was never going to fulfill the expectations as a former third overall pick. The challenge for Lance is going to be figuring out how to play without Kyle Shanahan. Is life really better with Mike McCarthy? Maybe the guy just doesn’t have it…
