Earlier this week, the Chicago Blackhawks waived veteran forward Corey Perry during the midst of an internal investigation. Now, Perry has apologized for the recent rumors and will look to seek treatment for struggles with alcohol.
Rumors spread around the NHL that Perry had sexual relations with the mother of Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard. In doing so, Blackhawks’ general manager Rob Davidson quickly deflected any clear-cut answer around Perry and the internal situation.
“I do want to be very clear on this one point,” he said. “This does not involve any other players or their families and anyone that suggest otherwise is wildly inaccurate, and frankly, it’s disgusting.”
“I think we went through the process as quickly as we could in order to run a responsible investigation,” Davidson said. “To be honest, over the last 24 hours, what’s gone on has been very disturbing and I feel like I’m wearing it. I’m carrying it. It’s tough to see.”
After his release, Perry sincerely apologized to the organization, fans, coaches, trainers, and more.
“I would like to sincerely apologize to the entire Blackhawks organization, including ownership, management, coaches, trainers, employees, and my teammates,” Perry wrote. “I would also like to apologize to my fans, and my family. I am embarrassed and I have let you all down.
“As a result of my actions, there has been speculation and rumors. I am sickened by the impact this has had on others, and I want to make it clear that in no way did this situation involve any of my teammates or their families.
“I have started working with experts in the mental health and substance abuse fields to discuss my struggles with alcohol and I will take whatever steps necessary to ensure this never happens again. I hope to regain the trust and respect of everyone who has believed in me throughout my career.”
In 16 games with the Chicago Blackhawks this season, Perry scored four goals and added five assists.
