The Carson Wentz era in Washington may as well be over at this point. I’m not sure I can recall a head coach throwing any quarterback under the bus quite like Ron Rivera did this week. This thing is getting ugly QUICK. This trade is clearly not going to go down under the win column for Washington.
You heard what I heard, right? The Eagles have a four game lead on the Commanders already through five weeks. Keep in mind the Giants and Cowboys are also 4-1. The Commanders are 1-4 and Ron Rivera said the reason why they are behind is because of “quarterback”.
Side note: Ron Rivera is the only defensive head coach in the division and it’s not a coincidence why their offense stinks so there’s that too.
Given how putrid this Washington offensive line is, I’m not sure Wentz had a chance but that’s not relevant. Regardless, it’s now clear Rivera is starting to hate him and we may as well start the clock for when Sam Howell is going to take the field. It’s going to happen and it should happen. This season is over and Washington should find out what they have at some point.
Furthermore, there is clear incentive for Washington to bench him. Here are the full terms of the trade, but the important takeaway here is the conditional third round pick Washington owes Indianapolis turns into a second rounder if Wentz plays 70% of the snaps. At this point, that’s an option Washington can’t afford to take. It also makes no sense to give up a second rounder in what is now a lost season.
It’s not all bad for Wentz. The guy does have ten touchdowns already including some gorgeous deep balls. It’s just the stupid stuff like the game sealing interception is what drives people crazy. Nevertheless, the point still stands. The Commanders are going to bench Carson Wentz. It’s just a matter of when.
